    afair the US is one of very few countries where joining the army is not compulsory. Did you guys freely choose to do it some time ago? Is that a case of being grown up a bit more now and having realized that military service means nothing but selling your ass cheap? Or you'd go to a war, just not this one? In countries like mine, where anyone can be conscripted it seems like it is bolder to avoid the army than to go there. Joining it is so passive, they'll come for you eventually if you do nothing. You must take action to avoid it here and it's not easy. It is really fair in the US, it's business: you decide to become a soldier and get paid. Not that there is much freedom in the US, but professional army based on volunteers actually means freedom most of the world could envy.
