What are you comparing it against? Animation? Well, the Animatrix is composed of several experimental NEW styles. Akira's style is fairly old but still incredible and incomparable to alot of new animation films out now. Although Akira is close around 10 years old? It still blow us away with it's larger than life city scapes and highly detailed animation! Akira wins!
Story? Well the Animatrix is based on the great story of The Matrix. Fairly unique and very believable. When I saw the movie I totally believe the made up explaination of the great film. Akira also delivers a very big complex story of the world changing around Neo-Tokyo and also the friendship between Tetsuo and Kaneda. Akira's story is much larger and has several sub-plots. Like the General bound to the safety of Neo -Tokyo. Kanedas little love interest with Kae (can't remember her name)? The little freaky kids and Akira. Just alot of content to chew on. Akira wins again.
You can't say that Animatrix is better then Akira. Akira is just way to big of a film in many ways.
Sorry for the typos!
