well, as an owner of an ibm thinkpad 600x i can safely say, it is possible to not only write code but run illustrator 10 and photoshop 7 on it with little trouble.
it works great, and you don' t the lack of video power on it much.
i will tell you this though, depending on what work you do - running linux on it, specifically redhat is a much better choice...especially if you want to exploit what little bit of graphics card there is.
linux seems to handle the lower end graphic cards better in terms of color management and accelerations.
of course this makes flash a no no...but GIMP and the Koffice version of illustrator are great.
