absolutely, it's actually worth putting a serious amount of time into. Less workarounds more work getting done.
And the strict data typing does wonders for debugging.
I had the opportunity to develop an entire app based on as2 (3 lines of code in the fla, 25 or so class files), and it was fun as all hell in a really geeky way.
