in response to the original post, your friend is partly right. I think getting out there and trying to make it is step one. However i do think that how easy or hard you have it may, at times, have a lot to do with your gender or race. I suppose what field it is would have a bearing on that too... That situation is more typical i think of smaller towns, and it seems that as you get into bigger more urban areas it's not as much of an issue.....
but yeah, your friend is partly right, if you have higher aspirations that 5.15 an hour a mickey d's they should put a little effort forth to better themselves. just because someone is stuck at a crappy job doesn't mean they deserve extra chances. At the same time, one should realize that it's not always going to depend on your skills or knowledge about something that will get you a job...
i'm rambling now..... you get the point.
