i have done it twice, once to dallas, and in the process of moving to nyc.
i would never do it until i have a job in the city i am moving to, maybe you will even luck out and they will pay some of your moving expenses. i personally like moving to a new place all by myself, i am sure this will not be the last time i do it, but i could never do it without knowing that i have a cashflow once i move.
i am shipping all my stuff with united van lines. never use a moving company that does not come to your house and look at your stuff (and give you a 'not to exceed' price), there are alot of companys online that will give you a low price based on an estimate you give them, but they will load you stuff, and then say that it ended up weighing more and will not give you your stuff until you pay them.
