DaveId: You have touched what, in my humble op, is really the point. All this mess is about fear. And some paranoia too. And some bad politics too. Mostly this :)
I think Spain has the right to leave, but it isn't very nice. Even if a really bad move was done by the previous government, there was a commitment that was broken by a question of principle (and as way of penalty to the US) which simply does not apply anymore. The mess was done, and Spain was there. It could be much more helpful there with a new conscience, making way for the UN.
