my steps a year ago:
#1 searched for a php event calendar
#2 understand the different parts of the code [database query, calendar making, filling event days]
#3 the only code I left on the php file was the db query. In flash I started tweaking the day numbers/weeks position to fit my purposes.
#4 you'll have to check if each day is similar to an event day in the db query. If so, highlight it.

As stated earlier, it's a great exercise in scripting, and you'll be able to master a whole bunch of stuff that uses similar logic.
