I don't know if i'm the only one on this, but I think it is irresponsible for any boss to dismiss an employee as soon as things get tight. That's a decision that has to be made prior to an actual hire. More importantly it's a responsibility.
If i was you, I'd go and try to snag all the buisiness you can from them, remember you made them more money than they paid you. Period.
