well if you're going to be keeping it at your desk, i'd go with the P4...

otherwise go with the centrino.. it's chip is much more efficient at handling it's processes, which makes it substantially faster.. it's also much much more efficient with power as it's able to shut down sections of its processor that is not being used. this results in a cooler running laptop and goes hand in hand with a quiet fan. nothing worse than getting a brand new laptop and having it sound like a hair dryer.

you can typically use the following ratio to determine how fast the centrino is..

in my best estimate from what i've done with both systems, centrino is about 1.8x faster than it's stated clock speed..
so in effect a 1.6 is the equivalent of about a 2.8. take the 1.7 and it's most definitely faster than the 3.06 ..

the best part about the pentium M chip (centrino - not to be mistaken by the P4-M) is that it's exceptionally good on battery power...

my dell 8600 runs at 4.5 hours with a full set of apps and a bright 15.4 widescreen. if the screen wasn't as huge, it would probably run at 8 hours..

a centrino is simply a Pentium M chip in addition to a wireless 802.1b intel card.
in effect though, most wireless products are comparable in performance and quality so you're not necessarily at an advantage at buy into a centrino product in comparison to a pentium M product with a wireless product from another respectable company..

in short - if the laptop isn't leaving your desk, go for the cheaper pentium 4-M, otherwise if you want the freedom to move around get the pentium M chip processor..

both are roughly the same in overall performance but one is a little more expensive and has better battery life..
i'm very happy with my pentium M laptop and if portability/power is your thing, definitly go for it..

bottom line? you get what you pay for.. happy hunting and hope this helps. i did my homework on this about a month ago so i understand the confusion there..

also - lots of good stuff on the net so cheker out..
