Hey Soler,
I moved here on a whim, been her like 5 years now. Agree fully with all the job security issues. I was w/o a regular gig for about a year and its freakin' stressful.
I'm close to that Silverlake/ Echo Park area, but a bit farther North in Eagle Rock/Highland Park, and I love it. Its fun, pretty safe, and fairly close to downtown - about 35 min to the beach. Lots of rock and roll dive bars and the like over here as well. Im paying 1090 for a 3 br house...but Ive been here a while - current prices are more like 1300 - 1500 or so for similar. Its a lot hotter up here than the costal areas, but you get a lot more space for the $.
A lot of it depends on where you work too, and how far you are willing to commute. I had a job in the valley for 2 years and spent about 14 hours a week going to and from. Im much happier now - about 2 cigarettes time away from the office.
