I'd say you'd be pretty safe. I work in a retail store where we sell digital cameras and a lot of times those cameras have only had accessories replaced. Rarely is the camera ever broken and then fixed. Most often that just isn't cost effective.
I bought a Sony P32 from my store that was just discontinued and had been sitting on the shelf. Works like a champ.
If you're lookin to save some dough, its a good way to go!
