Highland Park area, and the close surrounding areas. In my opinion its safer than Echo Park, a bit more family oriented, and also up and coming. I dont think I'd live down in Echo Park personally. Silverlake maybe, but its really over priced these days. Another area you might want to look for a place to buy on this side of town is Glassell Park. Similar prices to Highland Park, a little closer to downtown. Some of it is still kind of sketchy, but I doubt that will last much longer. The whole east side is being bought up pretty quickly. Those two areas surround Mt. Washington, which has one of the best schools in the area. I heard about a house up there last night that just went for 900K(!!).
Oh - thought about Glendale? Its safe, close to Burbank(possible work), close to freeways, etc. and still (sort of) affordable.
