I use Microsoft word for mac right now, but a while back I used appleworks a lot. Appleworks is fine, but here's a good tip: Always save your file as RTF (rich text), instead of .doc
RTF is perfect when your Mac file is opened on a PC or vice-versa (ask PC users to save their files as RTF for you). By the way, TextEdit also gives you that RTF option too. just select >format>make rich text, in case you use TextEdit.
