I lived in Amsterdam until 9 months ago. I've also lived in Germany (Göttingen) and in NYC and Buffalo in the US.
Amsterdam is expensive, dirty, touristy, unsafe and boring.
In general, Holland is much like Germany but without the good things.
Germany and the US are much nicer to live in, at least from my experience.
