could also be the mime type settings of either the server or the browser. latter one could be the reason. if so then basically your browser doesn't know what to do with it and just displays it as text. check you helper apps mime whatever settings, check what it does with files with a .mp4 extension. if you're on a mac you should use the quicktime plugin.
