I think X may have mentioned this method.
I can't believe no1 else has talked about it.
Just draw 4 rectangles with the colours you want and width. Align their bases and put them side by side. Select them all, then just go into the transform window and scale the height down to 1.
Group them, drag into Brush Palette and choose Art Arush.
Draw your shape using the pen tool and stroke with the brush. You can fiddle witht he art brush options too.
I always make rainbows using this method.
Easy, squeezy.
