you don't *have* to cache anything to affect display.
the two have nothing to do with eachother save speed.
you preload images to save on transfer time...but that is optional. it is more of a be kind to dial-up users method.
i for one hate caching, and set my browser to not only delete temp files on exit, but i lower my cache size to nearly nothing.
i find it particularly annoying to return to a site and realize it's a cached version.
