It is very annoying, basically you have to 'un-group' objects before you can apply a different 'fill/stroke'. Either that or select the group and using the 'Replace/Find graphics' panel you just apply changes that way.
FreeHand MX is good, but in my opinion [i have been using FreeHand from 3.0] FH 9-10 have been the best versions so far.
