Ask them if they'll pay you without doing any work for them--just to see how well their payroll system works before you commit.
"Spec" work is the scurge of the design industry. Don't give your work out for free. They have no intention of hiring you. They're looking for free work. The problem is you'll give them some great ideas and then they'll enslave some poor intern to produce it. I've seen it too many times before.
