I've been an avid 3dsMAX user for years, so I guess my opinion is heavily biased. I personally just love it. But it all comes down to your preference and what you make yourself good with. All of the top ones (MAX, Maya, Lightwave, Softimage) have their own strengths and weaknesses and it really depends on the kind of work you will be doing.
