I finally got to see this moving film. I do not have much to say, for just like Yosemite, the Pieta, or St. Peter's Bascilica, you just have to see it...
Briefly, to address the criticisms of violence and prejudice: they are both wrong and way off.
B/c of the hype surrounding the violence, the film seemed rather docile compared to the hype. It is not pornographic violence by any means. In fact, From Dusk till Dawn, Blade, and a host of other "art" films are much bloodier. The blood and violence was never gratuitous and never without purpose. As a student of History, I can only say that in depicting such an event accurately, the brutishness and extensive 'savageness' of the time is quite accurate. Though, I still found the violence quite mild compared to the hype.
As for the prejudice, all I can say is see the movie and pay attention to the second to very last scene. At the end, Mary is sending a very distinct and powerful message with her eyes, once you watch you'll understand.
So, go see it...
