The Romanian historian Neagu Djuvara addressed the theme of “the end of the West” as an integral part of his philosophy of history. His main thesis, elaborated at length in his seminal work *Civilizations and Historical Patterns* (awarded by the French Academy in 1976), argues that Western civilization has already entered its final phase of decline, following the biological pattern of the great cultures of the past.
Djuvara places this vision within a precise cyclical and structural framework:1. The Cyclical Pattern of Civilizations
Inspired by thinkers such as Arnold Toynbee and Oswald Spengler, Djuvara believes that no civilization is eternal. Every culture goes through stages similar to those of a living organism: birth, growth, maturity (zenith), old age, and collapse. According to his historical calculations, the creative phase of a great civilization lasts about three centuries, followed by a long period of stagnation and decline.
2. American Hegemony as a Modern “Roman Empire”
In his book *The Seventy-Seven-Year War (1914–1991) and the Premises of American Hegemony*, he explains that globalization and U.S. dominance do not represent the pinnacle of progress, but rather the imperial and administrative phase of the West. He draws a direct analogy with antiquity: The United States today plays the role that the Roman Empire played for the Hellenistic world—a massive military and political power that unifies the cultural sphere but marks the end of spontaneous spiritual creativity.
3. Symptoms of the West’s Decline
Djuvara has identified several clear signs indicating that the Western world is heading toward a climax:
• The drying up of creativity: The replacement of major artistic, philosophical, and cultural movements with a standardized, technical, and strictly consumer-oriented lifestyle.
• Demographic decline: The aging of European populations and falling birth rates, leaving a void that will inevitably be filled by waves of migration.
• Loss of faith: The abandonment of the spiritual values and religious core that formed the foundation of Europe’s rise.
4. What Comes After the West?
Professor Djuvara predicted that the phase of global dominance by the U.S. would be relatively short, giving way to a long period of general disorder, chaos, and fragmentation. From this historical crucible, over the course of several centuries, new civilizations will gradually emerge, most likely in parts of Asia or through entirely new cultural syntheses.
In his later interviews, Djuvara often recalled with serenity that this “end” should not be viewed as a dramatic apocalypse happening overnight, but rather as a slow historical process—a “slumber and apathy” in which great cultures live out their twilight.
- i feel like people are celebrating the death of democracy and liberalism, advocating for a tech-bro monarchy. Maybe i'm wrong but not saying Djuvara is rightIanbolton
