Honestly think the "AI safety" industry is one of the biggest grifts. Imagine being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to sit around thinking about hypothetical scenarios where AI destroys the world.
Reading people like Eliezer Yudkowsky or the "AI 2027" site and it's all pseudointellectual, speculative nonsense, like arguing whether Superman would beat Batman in a fight.
But they're created this community where they publish papers and thought experiments, heavily funded by the AI companies and "effective altruist" networks, and it ends up influencing politicians and journalists.
- its tiring to have to counteract - i have to constantly explain that AI is shit while also using it every day.kingsteven
- on the other side evangelists are promoting 'AI is amazing' because they don't realise that they are personally really good at using AI.kingsteven
- it's all my observations on failures in teaching 'digital literacy' within universities but applied to the general populace.kingsteven
- I think it can be an amazing technology but also have a more muted impact than a lot of people in the tech industry are imagining.yuekit
- It's just difficult to forecast anything purely through thought experiments, which might point to some limits of what intelligence alone can achieve.yuekit
