Just saw this in IMAX... mind blowing. Packed cinema too.

Standouts I noticed that didn't pick up as a kid growing up watching it on repeat...

    - The edit & pacing was so ahead of its time. It starts so explosive. Feels really fresh and kinetic even today... thrown right into the world of the biker gangs, the resistance, the colonel, these weird blue telekinesis kids... you're playing catchup with each beat of the story as it all starts to click together. Modern era directors like Nolan or even JJ Abrams... damn they owe a lot to this anime.

    - It's not confusing. As a kid was always piecing together the story. Watching now in Japanese with subtitles, the translation is so much more clearer.

    - The politics and violence is heavy. This is a dark, grim, hedonistic world. Otomo saw the writing on the wall forty years ago.

    - KEI. Realised... She was given the power by the esper kids... they then 'leave' that universe, take Tetsuo with them... yet they mention in Tokyo it's 'only the beginning' as Kei still is there. Pretty cool. I either forgot about this story beat, or missed it by watching the shitty English dubs for so long.

    - KAORI's death is brutal. Vomit worthy, even if it's just a flash.

    • Saw it recently too, feels even better now.PhanLo
