design is about progression so it's only natural to look at what's been done in order to advance.
the real question you have to ask yourself is how you react to what you see before you...do you stick with the status quo and only add (for example, inspired by David Carson you experiment with type) or do you react against it (see what David Carson has done and simply use helvetica and a rigid grid structure).
bear in mind though, design is about finding a solution to a particular need and shouldn't be based on just 'style'.
