The Quiet, Fateful Shift in Who’s Buying America’s Debt

    https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/…

Although it gets framed as more of a right-wing issue I think the national debt is the #1 reason to be pessimistic about the future of America. It's reached the point where we're now spending more just to pay the interest on the debt than we are on America's entire military budget.

And governments are increasingly no longer buying American debt...instead it's owned by hedge funds which means that in an economic downturn, this could trigger a fiscal crisis.

    • japan had debts up to points 230% all in yen though... i think the military comparison is useless.. its still 3.4% of the gdp .. thats whats normaly normal..neverscared
    • and europe is amping up now.https://www.surp...neverscared
    • https://www.surplusm…neverscared
    • now to that numbers, https://www.surplusm…neverscared
    • france has nearly as much debt, and its concerning, but not really critical to the whole operation.neverscared
    • Yeah Japan and France are also facing problems... but a lot of European countries are in a much better position.yuekit
    • And you have to look at the trajectory, Japan's debt is projected to stay at a similar level. The USA will just keep increasing if nothing is done.yuekit
    • In about 7 years America will run out of money to pay Social Security and Medicare, which is pension and healthcare for seniors.yuekit
    • no i mean japan as in some time back, cant remember but i listened to a podcast about national debt. a few days ago...neverscared
    • That's very different from northern EU countries where they can pay for all that and it's sustainable. America is like the OpenAI of countries, burning hugeyuekit
    • amounts of cash and hoping it will all work out somehow :)yuekit
    • and one bloke made a thesis once that at 90% the economy slumps 1-2 percent as a rule.. turned out wrong though..neverscared
    • i think the number 1 reason to be pessimistic is fascism in the US..., same in france if far right gets in power there ... adieu... same in austria.neverscared
    • True but I think you can't separate the two things. Like imagine a Democrat wins in 2028...because of the debt they may not be able to do much to help people.yuekit
    • yes thats an if... but imagine the óther if... if thiels gets his homeboy couchfucker vance it the presidents seat. u kinda cant seperate it.. because they workneverscared
    • People then get disillusioned and elect another right-wing authoritarian government. It's very difficult to imagine the two parties coming to an agreementyuekit
    • on such a difficult issue like how to reduce the debt.yuekit
    • together... the pockets have never been so loosely handed like in germany fascist rule..sort of like the big fugly bill might be the herald of a a coming age.neverscared
    • to some degree.. worst or better hard to tell..neverscared
    • sure.. its will not be a cakewalk... one probably can think that the right wingers becocome more moderate in mind in case they lose the electionneverscared
    • and they reached peak level auhtoritarian with trump.neverscared
    • lets trust in a midterm trashing for the rep. as a starter menu.neverscared
    • not a debt problem but a fraud problem.hotroddy
