Last night I was watching Bugonia with the GF and she said we need to turn it off as Emma Stone's character was being tortured/electrocuted. I flipped out as I said it's a satire about conspiracy theorists and it was silly, yet we see films all the time where men are being tortured (often to death) often for no reason.

I understand and appreciate that violence towards women needs to stop, but why is it okay to show constant violence towards men showing how disposable they are, but any violence towards women is BAD?

I shouldn't have flipped out, but I really find the sensitivity behind it all so frustrating and it limits the films we can watch together.

Please guide me in the right direction wonderful QBN'ers! x

    • Men dying in wars is "ok", but we cannot tolerate violence against women, and it exists. I personally cannot stand scenes of violence against women...OBBTKN
    • And let's not even talk about children. If a movie deals with the kidnapping of girls, for example, I stop watching it immediately.OBBTKN
    • I think there's too much violence in movies and TV shows; it's sometimes obscene. And the worst part is that it desensitizes us to it.OBBTKN
    • If you're going to watch a movie with your girlfriend, why not watch the typical cheesy ones? ;)OBBTKN
    • I personally can't tolerate violence towards anybody, but schlocky violent films can be fun in a stupid way. I think we end up being overly sensitive.Ianbolton
    • I love horror films, but i appreciate some people do not. I definitely overreacted last night and should've respected the fact she found it uncomforatbleIanbolton
    • I don't think i could deal with a GF who could only watch cheesy bullshit. Like, so disconnected from any kind of reality it's unbearable ;-)Ianbolton
    • Understood. We've always been fans of horror movies, but I think with all the REAL horror we see on screen now, we've lost interest or we're hypersensitive...OBBTKN
    • maybe its just a taste thing,, personally i dont like horror movies much,, are there great horror movies of course,. enjoy the limits u can watch .. maybe sheneverscared
    • comes around one day... with too much violence and femicides in society going on its also not suprising that ladies are not up for that stuff on the screen...neverscared
    • Don't generalise neverscared. It's not a men like this, women like this situation, but appreciate I overreacted. Just hard trying to find the boundariesIanbolton
    • Especially when there are so many contradictions in things like this. Yorgos Lanthimos is quite provocative with his humour too.Ianbolton
