(Some) Libertarians are framing Charlies Kirk's murder as a freedom of speech issue.

The shooting has nothing to do with freedom of speech. He was shot while in front of a public, his right to speech was not infringed on.

His life was take away not his freedom of speech. You could argue that by taking away his life all his rights were taken away as well, but it's still not about freedom of speech.

Political assassination is not an attack on free speech. Free speech is about the right to express your views without government suppression. Murdering someone for their ideas is political violence. It’s not the same as censorship. Calling it a free speech issue projects one ideology’s framing onto the event.

    • The problem with it in the US is that they’ve figured out a way to monetize it, the Kirk’s, the Alex jones, the Shapiros of the world have gotten rich spewing n_niko
    • ...nonsense, which is fine, all the power to them, but when they have mindless devotees listening and taking their word as gospel, it becomes an issue as it fans_niko

    • i find it complete madness that now the looney left are the least tolerant ever. But fact is, the left AND right are wings of the same bird and that bird...Ianbolton

    • "Truth-telling" may always be dangerous, but danger isn’t the same thing as censorship. Even MLK was murdered for his cause, but even he had free speech.palimpsest
    • Political assassination is political violence, not a First Amendment issue. Blurring that distinction doesn’t honor free speech, it dilutes it.palimpsest
    • Just the validation I needed.
I got banned from /r/Libertarian/ for posting these views.

    • I’m always shocked at how common it is for people to have a complete misunderstanding of what freedom of speech means.monospaced

    • I guess I shouldn’t be so shocked. Most conservatives are either brainwashed or just flat out ignorant on the matter.monospaced
