Spending a week on Lake Garda after a wedding in Venice (wink). I’m sat by the pool trying to re-read Blood Meridian, you know, something light and joyful.
Every twenty minutes or so one of the other guests kid turns on the jacuzzi. The violent noise, that the bubble-making germ-tub broadcasts, eviscerates the vibe, spilling the entrails of calm onto the pyre. The tension is palpable. What was once a collection of gently roasting, buttered humans turns into an agitated herd of greasy beached walrus.
And then the noise stops and it feels like the moments after an angry tooth ache passes. The gentle buzz of dopamine heightens the relief and for a few more minutes this is the physical manifestation of fine, fine Zero Seven cut.
I’m torn. Highs and lows, peaks and valleys or smooth sailing with none of the drama?
