There was an armed robbery in front of a home in my town last night that was captured on a Ring camera. A couple was walking from their driveway to their front door, and a car pulled up and three guys jumped out with guns, asked for their phones, the woman's purse, etc.
I live in the suburbs north of Chicago, which are generally relatively safe and don't experience anywhere near the level of crime that plagues the city of Chicago. Something like this is incredibly rare, but more and more, criminals, bangers, and now many immigrants living in Chicago are spreading out to hit the surrounding suburbs.
I took a look at the convos about it on Facebook. Naturally, the story is being shared hard by local Republican groups who want to blame Illinois, a Democrat run state (where we do indeed have concealed carry), want to blame Dem voters. Their posts and comments are full of the same tropey pro-gun, "this wouldn't happen at my home!" "Blue states aren't safe!" stuff, along with "they should have been concealed carry people!" despite the fact that even with concealed carry laws, not everyone wants to or needs to become a gun owner.
The level of myopia amongst these pro-gun people is really astounding but not surprising. They blame blue states for their laws and leadership when they see a crime happen there, yet willfully disregard the very real fact that in every single red state across the country, every single day, crime occurs, people get robbed, people get killed.
Like, do people even stop and think about that as they so singularly blame blue state crime on blue state policies? What do they blame red state crime on when red state policies exist in those states?
It makes my brain hurt.
There is indeed an ever-present crime problem in Chicago, and it does at times spill out into the suburbs. Gang problems in the city, and the influx of immigrants who are committing crimes, is growing (note: not ALL immigrants. There's been a steady increase in arrests of immigrants who committed crimes here). But the way those conditions get blamed in the context of a blue state, as if to say those are the only places that crime exists, is so outrageously ridiculous.
