After reading a little bit about 4K Blu-ray players last weekend, I realized that for years when I thought I was watching something in 4K, I really wasn't.

I have a 4K TV in my basement, but I have had my Apple TV and my Xbox hooked up to an HDMI receiver that does not have 4K pass-through. The Apple TV was also a 2nd gen version that didn't have 4k UHD.

Ordered 4k hdmi cables, bought a new Apple TV with 4k UHD, ran things straight to the tv and switched to optical audio out from the tv to the receiver.

I feel like I have a brand new TV. 4k content on Max and Netflix is stunning. Just to humor myself I will switch the Apple TV to a lower definition mode just to see what it used to be like and it is a night and day difference.

I can laugh about it because at least the solution and upgrades didn't cost a fortune or anything.

    • A receiver without 4k pass through must be over 20 years old! So glad you did this haha.monospaced
    • It's a Marantz NR1602 we bought in 2011.mg33
    • Then it absolutely does 4k passthrough. The HDMI out is 1.4 and supports ARC and 4k @ 30fps.monospaced
    • It was the Apple TV I believe that wasn’t giving you the resolution.monospaced
    • Using optical cables was also a huge mistake. Those are only if you don’t have HDMI which of course the marantz, Apple TV, Xbox and Tv itself all use.monospaced
    • mono - Thanks. Could be that all I needed was the new Apple TV, but I'm sure that hooking it and my X-Box directly to the TV was a good move.mg33
    • Now the TV (Samsung) properly adjusts its modes based on what the input is. It didn't do that ever via HDMI out of the receiver.mg33
    • That's nice for game mode on my XBox becuase i never put the TV in proper game mode before.mg33
    • mono - did some looking around and this receiver does not support 4K passthrough. It is a 1080p AV receiver with HDMI 1.4 inputs...mg33
    • - it can handle 3D and Audio Return Channel (ARC) but lacks the necessary bandwidth for 4K video passthrough or upscaling.mg33
    • Weird. HDMI 1.4 by definition has bandwidth for 4k. I also have a marantz receiver from this year (5012) and it handles it perfectly with HDR etc.monospaced
    • Oh man, you’re right! 1.4 is so outdated; I didn’t realize that unit was almost 15 years old. :)monospaced
    • I'm only using stereo speakers and a sub; my turntable is connected to it and sounds great. I'd love a vintage Marantz though!mg33
    • I've got Klipsch speakers, and might add a center and rear speakers eventually for a proper surround sound setup.mg33

    • Yeah, even just getting a center and running 3.1 you’ll have a blast.monospaced
