Can anyone recommend some good external monitors for a mac mini I may be getting.

My iMac has died suddenly and it's probably not going to be worth repairing as it's an Intel and quite old now. Although I am going to get it checked.

I could get a display for my macbook Air but although great for nearly everything, I do fancy getting a mac mini now. Anything above the base model soon gets pricey though.

The Apple display would be my first choice but it's just too expensive to justify I think.

    • asus new 5k monitor, well priced. probably what i would go for if i was buying right now.kingsteven
    • I've got two of these on an adjustable mount behind my desk. https://www.amazon.c…mg33
    • if you're doing mostly web work, Dell UltraSharp 27" 16:9 4K IPS LED Monitor [U2723QE] is more than enough_niko
    • honestly get anything that looks cool in your office, they all work about the same. I have a 10 year old $250 Samsung that I have 0 complaints with._niko
    • thanks all. food for thought there. Yep niko, it is mostly web, v.rare print. super accurate colour is not essential, although I would like similar quality tofadein11
    • those great iMac screensfadein11
    • I bought the 43" LG 4K (43SQ700S) display a couple years ago for $497 and love it. https://a.co/d/e0l5Q…utopian
    • feel like we would all have 5k monitors if there had been a good option under $1k, osx is designed to use 5k its why the imac and studio display look so good...kingsteven
    • definitely check reviews of that new acerkingsteven
    • They have newer ones, but I'm really happy with it.mg33
    • I'd love the Apple monitors, but you can't easily switch between computers on them, which is dumb.mg33
    • DELL U2723QE only slightly less good than the Studio Display except no webcam. Good price, 4k almost as good as 5k. Good colors

    • ooh, thanks nb and everyone else. Lots to look at :)fadein11
    • I use the Apple at work and the Dell at home. Apple is nicer but very glossy reflective and has no power button which makes it awful in my room

    • I have that Dell. Just the older version. Great display and USB C also charges the Mac, so only one cable :)monospaced
    • macOS isn’t optimized for 5k specifically, it just happens to handle it as well as it does 4k and below. It scales everything up anyway.monospaced
    • 5k is 2:1 scaling so with a 27" 5k everything is sharp and text is a legible and sharp on the smallest default zoom setting, just as it is on a 5k iMac or applekingsteven
    • 's own displays. when you use 4k the scaling is not bad (but arguably not quite as sharp) and scaling options are slightly too small and slightly too big.kingsteven
    • it's not a huge deal, but the new acer 5k is £800 - same price as i paid for my Benq 4kkingsteven
    • Yep. I use 4k and 5k and a good designer’s eye will easily see the difference. But the 4k is passable and the 5k isn’t work an extra grand imo

    • Curious about that new Acer now though. Reasonable price.

    • I’ve been using BENQ’s these past years; great colour and affordable, BUT I’ve cracked a few screens with small movements...ideaist
    • ...I’d consider something a bit sturdier moving forward; Apple’s lowest priced offering is nice. BUT as expensive as the computer itself!ideaist
    • shell out for the Benq its worth itcannonball1978
    • 5k is 2:1 in what sense? Native is native regardless of what resolution it is.monospaced
    • A 4k running at 4k isn’t scaled at all. It’s as sharp as you can imagine and has NOTHING to do with what macOS prefers.monospaced
    • and yet the studio display and iMac displays are noticeably better? there are multiple factors at play, there is a sweet spot where osx looks better and forkingsteven
    • 27" this is 5k. there are multiple articles on how apple chooses its resolutions for laptops, desktops, external displays. i'm not sure why you are insistingkingsteven
    • apple is wrong... they don't use 4k (3840x2160) 27" panels in any device for good reason.kingsteven
    • I just got the latest BenQ 27" 5k screen. It's an upgrade from the LG Ultrafine 27" 5k, nicer panel and colour specs.robthelad
