After declaring the Venezuelan elections fraudulent, five political asylum seekers have taken refuge in the Argentinian embassy. They describe their current situation as being under “siege” by Venezuelan security forces. The circumstances are grim—power and water have been cut off, leaving them in a state of growing desperation.
Venezuela is one of the worst places to be a political prisoner. The stories are horrifying: electrocution used as torture until victims lose control of their bodily functions, with photos leaked to humiliate them; or being thrown out of windows, later framed as suicides.
In the face of this nightmare, these individuals have turned to painting as a way to cope with the stress and maintain a shred of sanity.
