Can anyone give me a clear answer to this:

I am slightly near-sighted. Can I accurately focus my Leica M rangefinder without my glasses? Or do I need to wear them?

I shoot a lot, both with and without my glasses and haven’t had any photos out of focus so it makes me think my glasses make no difference to my ability to line up the viewfinder patch. But it could be just be that I’m getting lucky with depth of field.

    Does anyone know?

    • I don’t like wearing glasses when shooting, I can’t see full image within viewfinderfuturefood
    • M10/recent M’s have better eye relief allowing you to see more of the viewfinder while wearing glassesfuturefood
    • It sounds like we may have similar vision. I use correction, but I don’t necessarily need it. I do like having that extra bit of clarity within the viewfinder...futurefood
    • so I use a screw-in diopter. I’ve never had issues lining up the patch.futurefood
    • Since I also use zone focusing as well, I already know what I’m getting in focus with my selected aperture.futurefood
    • Yes I’d rather not wear my glasses, I often don’t unless I’m driving or working. I don’t wear them most of the time.

    • I’m less worried about eye relief distance and more about critical focus with the rangefinder. Film is expensive!

    • Like most rangefinder shooters, I use the viewfinder patch only to make sure I have the right distance and let the aperture do the restfuturefood
    • Right. So, can you align the patch perfectly on a far away subject without your glasses on?

    • Maybe I’ll go to the leica store and test my eyes on a digital body

    • I would say, no. And depending on your vision, it may get more difficult.futurefood
    • The newer M's have an awesome EVF, which I think has a built in diopterfuturefood
    • Older digital M's are much cheaper these days and are a great way to get into the systemfuturefood
    • whoops, i meant, newer M's have an optional** evffuturefood

    • ^that's the one! I had to buy 3, I lost one and another to fit the M10. What an itchy pain in the assholefuturefood
    • Follow-up, I tested this in a leica store with a digital M11. I can align the patch perfectly even though I can’t see the scene perfectly.

    • I might get a diopter but it’s good to know I can shoot film with or without my glasses on. Doubt this would work on a MF SLR
