    Design question:

On the topic of content hierarchy... How do you know when it's ok to have a blog based homepage and when to have a 'content hierarchy' based homepage?

Quote: 'you can use the following formula (which seems to work well for my clients) to identify and document your goals: We want ___ (action) ___ , because ___ (reason) ___ , so that ___ (objective) ___ '

Let's say I'm designing a website that shows off my cooking skills, which I have a youtube channel for.

I want my youtube fans to buy my patreon upgrade, because that will give me some steady income and them some extra value, so that they'll be happier, hopefully be converted to lifelong fans/customers and I can continue to grow my brand.

I used the formula but I'm still as confused as ever. If I put a blog on my homepage, it's always last in first. Meaning freshest content goes in front, right after my title and tag line.

I always assumed that is too daft an approach. But in web 2.0 tons of sites do newest first, blog style. Maybe my assumption was wrong?

Is "newest content first" ok to put directly on your homepage, or should it be put like www.mysite.com/blog

To complicate things further, I'm beginning to think also of load times, for the first time.

    I need help, someone.

    • So I guess the tl;dr version is I'm getting tripped up over ascending vs descending page order.cherub
    • Is the job of your homepage to convert visitors from YouTube to be paying Patron subscribers?mort_
    • At present moment, yes it definitely is. Because Patreon itself doesn't lend itself to a homepage well.cherub
    • If that's the case, you need a home page that will convert them. Not a blog. A page that explains the benefits of joining your Patreon and a clear CTA.mort_
    • Like here's all the good stuff Patreon members get. Click here to join. Keep it really simple with minimal other links.mort_
    • For more research, look up Landing Page design. The page you send your YT people to should be like a landing page.mort_
    • I think you are right come to think of it. If they land on a blog post of my latest youtube vid... then after they read that and scroll down to the older postscherub
    • they're likely to be like, ok now what? So... then if the nav takes them to CTA stuff, i.e. the patreon benefits then I have presented everything backwards.cherub
    • Yeah, landing on a single purpose page that shows the benefits will convert much better.mort_
    • The landing page doesn’t have to be the home page btw. You could link YT vids to a special page like site.com/patreon or something like that.mort_
    • yeah I was going to ask that. A home page should be universal in case they land on my URL naturally. 'landing' now makes more sense. it matters where they camecherub
    • from.cherub
    • So far I found this, which explains it well... https://unbounce.com…cherub
    • Yeah, you’ve got the idea now.mort_
    • The Patreon stuff should also feature fairly prominently on your homepage since some people will land there as well as on your special landing page.mort_
