Do you think that back in 2022 Putin thought that by late 2024 he'd control less territory and that Ukraine would be invading Russia?
Putin's best chance for a deal was for Trump to be elected, something that looks increasingly unlikely. The high water mark for him was the GOP Congress blocking aid to Ukraine (which makes a mockery of the idea that it's a "US proxy war"), and they may also be gone next year.
So where is the victory coming from exactly? Russia can try to hold onto the territory they've seized but the chances of the international community, even China, recognizing the territory as part of Russia are virtually none.
It's not really that impressive that a military superpower can invade and seize land from the poorest country in Europe. It is impressive that Putin could have gotten himself into a clusterfuck like this when he didn't need to with no clear resolution or end in sight.
