It’s Closing Arguments in the @ejeancarroll v. Donald Trump second defamation trial.
Trump and his lawyer, Alina Habba, are off to an inauspicious start by arriving late to court and getting scolded by Judge Kaplan.
Judge Kaplan orders the parties: “During closing arguments NO ONE is to say anything other than counsel. No interruptions or audible comments by anyone else.”
Trump’s lawyers try to use slides of tweets that weren’t entered into evidence and Carroll objects.
Judge: You’re not showing the slide.
Habba: But, your Honor...
Judge: Sit down. You are on the verge of spending some time in the lock up.
Judge instructs the jury that after closings, he will charge the jury (meaning he will read them the jury instructions), and then have them begin deliberations during lunch, which will start a little bit later.
Robbie Kaplan begins with telling this jury that another jury has already found Trump sexually assaulted E. Jean and defamed her when he said she lied about it. She says that’s why his testimony was so short yesterday: he doesn’t get a do-over.
R. Kaplan: This case is about how to compensate E. Jean for the harm and the emotional pain and suffering. It’s also about punishing Trump for what he has done and continues to do. To get him to stop doing it.
Trump thinks the rules apply to everyone else but not him.
R. Kaplan: E. Jean now lives a life of a storm of hates & threats & disgusting attacks from people she doesn’t even know based on Trump’s lies.
Trump has tried to normalize conduct that could hardly be more abnormal. Usually people stop but not him.
TRUMP WALKS OUT OF COURT
Judge Kaplan: Let the record reflect that Mr. Trump just walked out of the courtroom.
