but on the other side, most Christians (and this film) continue to portray the spikes in the arms wrong. from crucifixion victims that have been studied from that time period, the nails were driven through the wrists... not the hands... as the hands would not support the weight of the body (would just rip right off), and as the JAMA article points out, the wrist is more painful because of a main nerve that flows through there - further tiring out the crucified person toward death.
I can only guess, but i suppose Gibson made that choice because a lot of people wouldn't understand why he drove the nails through the wrists in the movie (despite being more historically accurate).
