oof... took a heavy mental hit today a little after my stoner post below.
One of my all-time favorite clients (goes back more than 20 years) contacted me a couple weeks ago to make some changes to their site... nothing big - address adjustment and to adjust some legal info.
A couple days later his email went down... normally he'd be on the phone in seconds trying to figure out what's up. The only reason I knew there was an issue is I had emailed him to let him know his info changes were complete but his emailed bounced back... so I texted him. He responded immediately and told me he hadn't been aware his email was having issues — He then gave me his login credentials to Gmail and asked me to take a look. Turns out Gmail just wants him to verify his domain name but it had to be done by him responding via his other email to a verification email from Gmail.
I told him "I can't check that email without your credentials... but you don't need to send me those... all you have to do is click the link in the email and simply follow the verification steps".
"Nice! I'll handle it after the game or first thing in the morning."
A week went by and I opt to check in w/ him and see if he's all set. I texted... nothing. I emailed... the email bounced back. :/
The guy runs a fairly lucrative real estate investment setup. He's been the brains behind entire neighborhoods, 30 story apartment buildings and even help finance some massive Vegas stuff over the years. He never lets anything slip... till now. :(
Today I got a text from another client of which was a referral of his (the client I mentioned a couple posts back whose website I've been idiotically financing the last 2 years). She has been a romantic interest of his for years on and off... they're very close.
Anway — Her website was offline... haha... cuz my credit card went defunct. Within minutes I had that all sorted out for her. All done.... almost.
She too then pointed out that her email was also giving her trouble... turns out for the exact same reason as the other guy — domain verification. I laughed out loud and said "How funny... you and XXX are having the exact same issue! Only XXX hasn't fixed his email yet!"
She went a little silent... slight pause... "There's a reason for that. XXX is not well and last Wednesday night was probably his last truly coherent night. I took him to dinner... he was fine but later when we got home he just switched off."
I'm all confused and start asking the standard Q's... what's going on? Is XXX okay???
"This morning his family procured him at-home hospice care."
....
... "HUH?!! :( :( I was just talking with him and joking about how bad our favorite team is this year not even a week ago."
Turns out XXX is literally a 45 minute drive from me over in Vermont. I thought he was still out in Scottsdale etc. Nope... my other client informed today that XXX came home to Vermont last week... to be with his family and pass on.
Poor sweetheart of a human has prostate cancer and it's got him. He's such a kind man that he hasn't told a SOUL w/the exception of family. He doesn't like attention and doesn't want to worry people. :( Last Wednesday was his last good day... He's been damn near unresponsive the last 3 days. My other client (obviously very close to the man) was literally holding his hand while talking to me and giving me the news over the phone... What a shitty Saturday. :/
