    that's the whole point.

    hamas / iran knew exactly what would happen. they WANTisrael to retaliate massively and kill loads of palestinians. as a bonus, they got to kill, wound and capture lots of israeli hostages; then watch as israel piles in all guns blazing and kills / maims 000s of palestian civilians to general outcry.

    iran (shia) calculates that with all the resulting dead and injured muslims at the hands of the israelis, the saudis (sunni) will be forced to abandon the tentative deal that included some sort of recognition of / right to exist for israel. even now the saudis are trying to see if there's a way to save their deal from going south.
