    Serious questine.

Is non-verbal autism a recent thing or on the rise? I swear I never once heard of any kid having this before maybe... 2010? It seems to be common on the internet. You’re always reading some comment about a friend or neighbor having a nonverbal austitic child. But I’ve never heard about a kid with this in real life, ever. Just on the internet. And I know tons of families! Can it really be that I read a story on the internet maybe once a month that references a specific condition and at the same NEVER heard about this condition in 40+ years of life? Seems odd.

    • I know 2 with this condition.

    • It was always a thing. We just wrongly labeled them retards in the 80s and they were in different classes.monospaced
    • They just got better at diagnosing. Or big pharma saw the expanding DSM as an opportunity. Depends on the material from which one's hat is constructed.MrT
    • @monospaced: that’s an interesting observation. I recall plenty of kids with special needs, one of my schools had an entire class full of them

    • The kids mingled with the rest of the us, obviously they were not the cool kids but I don’t recall meeting anyone that you’d think of as “non-verbal”
