    (request for advice)

My wife is contemplating a career change and became interested in graphic design. She sees what I do and wants to learn. The problem is that I come from a heavy print background and don't want her feeling like that is all design is.

I am looking for any advice on programs, classes, etc. to help her get a start. She wants to help her dad start a custom drum business, so i think she can learn all of that while helping him (me on the side as well).

What would you tell a person just starting out interested in design to do?

    • i've been looking at coursera, dribbble, and skillshare as tools so far.capn_ron
    • AI prompt engineer ;)monospaced
    • This needs a seperate thread, but my first suggestion would be 'Just Do It'. I have a client who's done as much and has come on real strong over 2 yearsNairn
    • she started out doing 'one thing' then found herself increasingly developing her graphic and type skills. She's not brilliant, but she's good enough, so £Nairn
    • that aside, from everything i read here - now is not a greast time to be getting into GD, lol. SO perhaps as @monospaced suggests - big up the AINairn
    • @mono - i'm going to be showing her what i know about AI for sure. At least so she can visualize ideas to create.capn_ron
    • @nairn, such good advice. I told her she should do some research for her dad's company and then concept a logo and feel overall.capn_ron
    • I feel like this is the best way for her to actually start without overthinking and it will feel productive because it can be used ultimately.capn_ron
    • I would love if she could come up with a mood board and brand exploration for her dad to then have a solid idea of something to create.capn_ron
    • I fancied switching from design a few years back when we were renovating our house. I liked the idea of being a tiler, good job satisfaction i thought...microkorg
    • ...until i spoke to a tiler. Fuct knees, carrying tons of tiles up stairs to flats. Fuck that.
Same with being a designer , as nairn said, not a good time...

    • Beginner or designers with low skill level are up against AI and that will only increase over the next year.microkorg
    • Advice would maybe be to start out with some small freelance or fun projects to see if she's cut out for it. She might find she enjoys managing design more.microkorg
    • Then to get a job at any type of agency you'd have to build up a folio of work of a professional standard. Unless you've got natural talent it could takemicrokorg
    • years to get to that kind of level.microkorg
