My 16 y/o just asked me if he can get an electric guitar! so excited, he'd been making music electronically for the past 7-8 years and played acoustic when he was a kid.

I'm so stoked, and not sure why!

I have no idea about theses things so my question is what is a good one to start him off on? I'm guessing something used?

    • Sounds to me like he's serious about music, so I'd push the boat out. A Les Paul (or its ESP equivalent), maybe a 7 string Ibanez for extra chunky goodness.Continuity
    • If he was just fucking around and you knew he'd give it up in six months, then some used cheap as chips Yamaha thingy.Continuity
    • Thanks Continuity, yeah more on the serious side something like this? https://cosmomusic.c…_niko
    • or this? https://cosmomusic.c…_niko
    • I guess he should just go to a shop and try a bunch for feel?_niko
    • That Epiphone is very nice, and a really good starter guitar, imo. It's not top of the range Gibson/Epiphone, but still solid.Continuity
    • And yeah, make an occasion out of it. Let him chug and shred to his heart's content until he has an idea what he wants.Continuity
    • (I guess kids these days will want something that can be tuned to C or B standard without the strings going all slack, anyway)Continuity
    • (If they're into metal)Continuity
    • awesome, thanks man!_niko
    • Don't take my word for it, though. QBN has far, far better guitar players than me!Continuity
    • I got my kid the epiphone les paul. Good starterGnash

    • its a bit of a minefield, if you know what guitarists he likes thats a good start.kingsteven
    • thanks Gnash, there's a L&M not too far from me_niko
    • if you know any good guitarists locally ask them to have a look on local classifieds. if you know what you're looking for you can find guitars with £500 ofkingsteven
    • upgrades for the original price of the guitar... pickups, tuners, cases and 'played in' setups - stuff like light sanding the neck makes a professionalkingsteven
    • instrument from anything. saying that aesthetics really matter, you have to want to pick up a guitar first, then continue playing it...kingsteven
    • and you wouldn't want to go too metal (like my first guitar) and then have to sell it to play in an indie bandkingsteven
    • ^ someone started with a BC Rich Warlock, didn't he? :DContinuity
    • Dean ML ffs R.I.P. Dimebagkingsteven
    • let him find the one he wants in the classifiedsdoesnotexist
    • My first guitar was a warlock. It was so cringe learning and sounding like shit on such a cool looking piece. Switched to a les paul epiphonescarabin
    • I'd take a Les Paul over a Warlock any day of the weak.

Now, an Explorer shape ... drool.
