just thought of something else.
if you're using Windows XP - i plugged a USB 2.0 hard drive into a 1.1 USB port, and XP popped up a window telling me "You are plugging a Hi Speed 2.0 device into a USB 1.1 port. Speeds will be slower" or something like that.
