What's sad is that Putin is now committing everyone to an extended war. There's no way he can back down in the near term but also no way Ukraine and the world can accept an illegal annexation like this.

No one wants a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia so therefore the only path forward is war of attrition that eventually forces Russia's hand. That means a bad economy, inflation and energy shortages for the foreseeable future and that life will get increasingly dismal and miserable for Russians.

    • Yeah you're right, a country that bankrolled Israeli annexation of Arab lands could never countenance this flagrant violation of international norms.Khurram
    • We'll just have to keep fighting lolKhurram
    • Also - didn't Trump recently rubber stamp Morocco's annexation of Western Sahara?Khurram
    • In return for recognition of said Israel's previous annexation of Arab lands?Khurram
    • It's nice that even after being hit in the head so many times you can still do the "whataboutism." But no I'm not a fan of Israeli government either...yuekit
    • Have you considered that maybe there are countries in the world other USA, Israel and Russia and particularly those countries in the region might not want toyuekit
    • let the precedent of Russia seizing their neighbor's territory by force stand?yuekit
    • And that Europe might not want to let Russia take over energy supplies...even if we do this braindead moral equivalency countries still have interests and in ayuekit
    • world where toss out any moral concerns or care about international law, you still might expect them to act on those interests.yuekit
    • It's called realpolitik. Look it up!Khurram
    • Yeah it's called realpolitik not to let Russia invade countries lolyuekit
    • You seemed to be implying some sort of moral imperative to restore Ukrainian territorial integrity.Khurram
    • No need to choose one or the other, it's both morally wrong and a direct material interest of Europe and others not to let Russia do this.yuekit
    • Remember there was only a minor reaction to annexation of Crimea. Now Putin is trying to take over an area the size of Portugal just because he can.yuekit
    • Yeah right. Fucking hypocrites.Khurram
    • Moral imperative to wage a war of attrition. That's hilarious.Khurram
    • Are you in favor or against countries waging violent unprovoked wars and annexing territory?yuekit
    • This is always the hole with these “whatabout...” type arguments. You point to some other example (which isn’t a great comparison in this case) implying it makesyuekit
    • people hypocrites to condemn Russia. But by definition you’re also a hypocrite, an even worse one.yuekit
