Apple store went down just as I was hyping myself up to buy a ridiculously expensive USB-C 3.1 / TB3 cable to hook up my monitor. I had to buy the same (Belkin) cable before for my LG but does anyone know if newer passive TB4 cables are also backwards compatible for single cable monitor connection to a M1?
- I have ordered this one, only .8m but more than 100 quid less than apple's 2m active TB4 cable :D will see sure https://www.amazon.c…kingsteven
- I’m interested in this. I recently damaged the one that came with my dell and have been using a TB to DVI or something like that. But would prefer Thunderboltnb
- I’ve read that the price difference is because under 1m means that it works passively. Apple sells TB3 still, no? In 0.8m?nb
- I shop for 'usb-c data', the 'data' part is crucial, has worked for me. the brand is otterbox. (not tested on a M1, but for 1 monitor you should be ok).uan
- People think USB was a poorly designed port? Try buying a fucking USB-C or TB cable. There are like 10+ standards using the same connectornb
- It’s a nightmare trying to discern which cable will work Apple-to-Dell Display, with fast data, charging, etc. Prices range from $9 to $149 lolololnb
- i'm pretty sure i tried one of the white TB3 cables with my LG and it didn't work. but i guessing smarter to buy TB4 if the same price (and hopefully works)kingsteven
- i was thinking that when the EU ruling came in demanding USB-C on consumer devices. this is going to be an absolute melt in 10 years...kingsteven
- already a lot of these 'passive' cables have active electronics to ensure they wont blow up early devices that use the same connector for USB-Ckingsteven
- Yup! My wife charged her Lenovo laptop off my monitor – both have USB-C connector. It charged but fried something. Cable, display, or both are fucked.nb
- Now I need to buy various cables between $9 - $149 to test to see what happened? What a disaster of bad designnb
- Port matches cable, is designed to charge laptops, so we plugged a laptop into it. Just THAT can fry your expensive hardware? Feels like 1990 againnb
- And none of these ports are fucking labelled. MBP, Lenovo, Dell have just an icon that is the same shape as the port (lol) or no label at all.nb
- No prob, just spend an hour reading about cable tech then find a simple USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 5A cable. Easy, but will it work? NO ONE CAN SAY.nb
- haha, yeah. i'm also continuously googling apple's implementation of browser standards. very easy to see how 'standards' slipping benefits their system :-|kingsteven
