the reasoning is this...
at exit polls, when those who voted for nader were asked wether they prefered bush or gore, two thirds said they prefered gore. so had nader not been running, two thirds of the votes for nader would have gone to gore. and that would have been enough for him to win.
the weaknesses in the argument are:
*those voters might not have necessarily voted had nader not run
*the two thirds that would have gone to gore (had nader not run) would be dilluted through out the 50 states, only having an effect on the popular vote
*the exit polls and statistics are accurate
*there are other third patries
