This one's a bit weird, from idTV.com:

VEIL, Warner Bros., Mattel Team on Line of TV-Activated ToysSt. Louis, Missouri-based VEIL Interactive Technologies, which has developed an unusual technology that manipulates the luminance of the broadcast video image in order to allow data transmission to PDA's and other devices over virtually any TV-broadcast infrastructure (even over analog TV sets connected to nothing more than an old-fashioned antenna), has teamed with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Mattel (which holds a license to develop toys based on Warner Bros. properties) to enable a new line of toys from Mattel to respond to signals transmitted over the TV.
VEIL's Video Encoded Invisible Light (i.e. VEIL) technology will transmit encoded digital data embedded in the video of Warner Bros' new animated series, "The Batman." The data will then be captured by Mattel's new "Batwave" toys--provided those toys are in the line of sight of a television tuned to "The Batman"--via a removable module containing an LCD screen, and will unlock various capabilities in the toys: the toys will react to the signal by "coming to life" with lights, motion and sound, as well as with various displays (including games) on their LCD screens. Both the toys and the new series, which will initially be broadcast on the Warner Bros.' Kids' WB! channel and subsequently on the Cartoon Network, are scheduled to debut this fall.
