Between the pandemic and now war in Ukraine, the cost of living in Germany is getting to be untenable.
7.3% inflation, and that's driving everything up; food (5€ for a 1-litre bottle of canola oil — *if* you can even find some in the shops — when before it was 80 cents, for example), heating, fuel. It's only a matter of time before everything goes up astranomically. To say nothing of already shocking rents in Munich (920€ per month for my 28 m2 one-room flat, and that's considered cheap on this market).
And, of course, salaries aren't going up.
I'm really having difficulty seeing how — or even if — this situation would improve, short-, medium-, or long-term.
I'm seriously thinking of trying to find work and relocate to somewhere where COL and inflation aren't so elevated. France, Spain, Portugal, Greece.
At least I'd also have the benefit of seaside life, even if I'm rat poor.
- WTF – I just posted something similar WITHOUT reading your post prior...SimonFFM
- I know! Weird, right?Continuity
- Absolutely feel the same.SimonFFM
- Paris is becoming increasingly expensive too, I'd only recommend moving here if you work in the fashion / luxury industry.spl33nidoru
- I was thinking more Nice, that area. But it's not like it's got a hopping ad agency scene there. Not even Marseille.Continuity
- Bordeauxpalimpsest
- Nice is neat, but not cheaper than Munich. Is it?SimonFFM
- As far as I know, it is, based on what another ex-GF of mine told me a few years ago. The problem is the lack of agencies.Continuity
- Yes, sounds difficult.SimonFFM
- Let me know if you need any tips on Spain.Chimp
- This is what 900€ can get you in Madrid: https://www.idealist…Chimp
- Taxes and freelancing are easier in Portugal.Chimp
- what with the whole 'work from home' vibe and relaxed attitude about being 'in the office' does it matter if Nice doesn't have many ad-agencies?exador1
- you could get a nice apt. there and still continue to work for agencies in the bigger cities.. they don't really care where you live, just that you get yourexador1
- work in on time.exador1
- I think it kind of does, insofar as I don't have a network to speak of outside Germany.Continuity

- Convert your cash to Bitcoin, move to El Salvador. Is there any point moving to another Euro country?shapesalad
- Braga, €750pm https://www.idealist…shapesalad
- Bordeaux is a dead-end if you work in ad, much smaller city than most expect (unless wine biz). Nice = great lifestyle, you could work with agencies in Monaco.spl33nidoru
- ^ but connect with Monaco agencies before moving there. There are agencies in Nice but smaller. You'd be doing a lot of tourism/lifestyle-re... jobs.spl33nidoru
- How does canola oil go from 80 cents to 5€?NBQ00
- @spl33nidoru: I had to laugh at your Paris comment a bit — I just spent the last year working for luxury brands (Montblanc, Longines, A. Lange & Söhne)Continuity
- Not sure I want to keep doing that.Continuity
- NBQ, because most of it comes from Ukraine.Continuity
- @Continuity, yeah that's what I do myself ! Not the most creative jobs, but that's where the money is, and sometimes you meet pleasant people.spl33nidoru
- And why would you need canola oil anyway? Buy olive oil or something like that :)NBQ00
- lol at Spainernexbcn
- It's the same everywhere man. It's all shit.Hayzilla
